Why does the job exist? To screen applicants to determine eligibility by assessing income, residency and nutritional risk.
Provide nutrition education to low risk participants at certification.
Provide group facilitated nutrition education and information on healthy eating, health counseling, breastfeeding support, nutrition classes, cooking classes, referrals to healthcare providers and social services and outreach activities.
Interviews are anticipated to be conducted within two weeks of certified list.
How does it get done? Maintaining effective and efficient WIC operations in the Region by WIC Nutritionists in assessing nutritional risk, determining eligibility, and providing one-on-one and group nutrition education.
Provide quality client services using constructs of Participant Centered Education as required by USDA.
Perform clerical duties such as filing, typing, data entry, word processing, and other computer software applications; operate photocopiers, fax machines, and other office equipment; and prepare mailing, answer phones, answer questions, deliver messages, and make appointments.
Other administrative duties include WIC electronic card inventory, archiving, vendor monitoring, supply and pharmacy orders and vehicle coordination.
- Assist WIC Program Manager to increase community awareness and positive perception of the Public Health Division- WIC Program by providing outreach in the community and interacting with other Public Health programs.
Other duties include participating in health fairs and developing nutrition education bulletin boards with approved WIC messages.
Who are the customers? Pregnant, Breastfeeding and Post-partum women, infants and children - up to the age of five (5) years who qualify to participate on the WIC Program.
Ideal Candidate Fluent in both English and Spanish.
Entering and retrieving data from multiple information systems including the New Mexico Women, Infants & Children Program Automated Data System.
Conducting interviews and determining eligibility for services.
Working with low income families.
Providing referrals to other resources available in the community.
Minimum Qualification A High School Diploma or Equivalent and one (1) year of WIC experience preferred or government assistance programs such as welfare, unemployment benefits, social security benefits and/or public housing.

Employment Requirements Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.
Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.
Successful completion of Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act and successful completion of Clinical Laboratory Improvements Act courses are required within sixty (60) days of employment.
Working Conditions Services are provided in communities, clinics, auxiliary site settings and in the homes of consumers to a diverse racial and ethnic population, many of whom do not speak English.
Reaching and lifting up to fifty (50) pounds may be required.
Potential exposure to communicable diseases.
Travel to provide outreach and coverage to attend meetings and training sessions with the occasional overnight stay is required.
